As defined by the U.S. Geological Survey, an earthquake encompasses "sudden slip on a fault, and the resulting ground shaking and radiated seismic energy caused by the slip, or by volcanic or magmatic activity, or other sudden stress changes in the earth."

EDEN's Earthquake Initiative

Following significant earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, EDEN recognized the need for more earthquake preparedness information for Extension educators. Delegates were invited to become involved in discussions about earthquakes and catastrophic disasters, addressing topics including: geography, economic impact, number of people potentially affected, agricultural impact, infrastructure damage, diseases, potential partners, and funding sources.

The working group includes Extension professionals from Arizona, Florida, Oregon, Hawaii, Guam, Tennessee, Missouri, North Carolina, Kansas, and Wyoming.
