Oil is difficult to clean — often taking weeks and months to recover and years for the impacted environment to stabilize. Oil sticks to the fur and feathers of marine mammals and birds and can cause respiratory and reproductive issues. It directly affects water quality both on land and in coastal environments.
Current oil spill cleanup methods include skimming the oil off the surface of the water, using absorbents and chemical agents to break down and absorb oil, and controlled burning. Preventing oil spills is essential for protecting the environment, particularly along coastlines and oceans.
