Power Outage

A power outage occurs when electrical power goes out unexpectedly. Extended power outages may impact communities and economies, and can:

  • Disrupt communications, water, and transportation
  • Close retail businesses, grocery stores, gas stations, ATMs, and banks
  • Cause food spoilage and water contamination
  • Prevent use of medical devices

Food Safety and Power Outages

When there is an extended power outage, the threat of foodborne illness increases. Learn more with Michigan State's Food Safety Fact Sheet.

  • Perishable foods should always be kept at or below 40°F; frozen items at or below 0°F.
  • Use thermometers — relying on appearance or odor is not a safe indicator of food safety.
  • Do not taste food to determine safety.
  • If in doubt, throw it out — discard any food, beverage, or medication that was at an unsafe temperature.
  • Keep your refrigerator and freezer closed — an unpowered refrigerator can keep food at safe temperatures for up to 4 hours.

Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS)

During extreme weather events in high fire-threat areas, electrical power may be shut off as a precaution known as a Public Safety Power Shutoff. It is essential to prepare for a PSPS and have a plan. View the UC PSPS Fact Sheet to learn more.
