Tsunami

By definition, a tsunami is a series of waves caused by earthquakes or undersea volcanic eruptions. Tsunami waves can travel as fast as aircraft in open water and wreak havoc on shorelines. The threat of tsunamis in the United States is generally along the Pacific Coast and in the Caribbean, but they can impact any coastal area.

Since the massive tsunamis that struck Southeast Asia, Samoa, Chile, and Japan at the beginning of this century, early warning systems have been enhanced and greater attention to preparedness efforts has been made.
