Companion Animal Care In The Face of The New World Screwworm (NWS) Threat

Texas A&M UniversityTexasAdded Jul 16, 2026

This factsheet discusses the risk New World Screwworm (NWS) poses for dogs and cats as well as other companion animal species (e.g., rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, etc.). The ensuing myiasis from a NWS larval infestation may be fatal for dogs and cats, depending on anatomic location and severity of the infestation, care, and timing of the diagnosis. Understanding how to monitor and treat NWS is imperative for companion animal owners and care takers.
