The New World Screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) is a serious animal health threat affecting livestock, wildlife, pets, and, in rare cases, humans. This parasitic fly larva feeds on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals, causing severe wounds that require prompt treatment and reporting. In June 2026, the screwworm was discovered on cattle in Texas.
